Editorial Review

The Future of Work explores the new behaviors, new technologies, and the new people entering the workforce, focusing on: how the traditional command and control leadership model is dead; working with and for Millennials, who expect to be doing meaningful work, share their voice, and want rapid feedback; how to adapt to the mobile worker; how to succeed when the corporate ladder is replaced by employees creating their own way; why the future of work is about sharing information and not hoarding it; and how new technologies are reshaping the way we communicate by forcing an open environment of collaboration among all levels. It is about what we can do to reach our bottom line while empowering our employees across the board, creating not only profitable businesses and meaningful work, but an environment to attract and keep the best talent.

Cloud-based technologies should decrease the time to deploy, make upgrades easier and faster, and allow organizations to put together their own “stacks” made up of components from various vendors.

Collaborative technologies are finally enabling the behaviors we are used to in our personal lives to take shape inside of our companies.

Collaborative technologies are finally enabling the behaviors we are used to in our personal lives to take shape inside of our companies.

More data means more potential information that can be gathered about anything. This can lead to better decision making. Being able to filter the information and make sense of it is crucial.

The notion of working 9 to 5 in a cubicle and commuting to an office is dead. All you need to get work done today is an Internet connection.

To simplify globalization, it’s essentially the ability to do business around the world without boundaries.

More and more it’s becoming harder to differentiate if someone lives in another city or on another continent. This ability for organizations to operate anywhere in the world is dramatically changing how people work.

Flexible work has three components: The ability to work anytime; the ability to work anywhere; and the overall focus on employee outputs not just on inputs.

Future employees will shift from being knowledge workers to learning workers. It’s no longer about what you know, it’s about how you can learn and adapt.

The future employee will be able to learn from others and teach others on a variety of topics ranging from creating presentations to how to submit a corporate invoice.

The future employee wants a flexible work environment, career path opportunities, the chance to do meaningful work, and several other things aside from just getting a paycheck. This means that many organizations can’t leverage their single greatest resource to help them, cash.

Often, non-managerial employees are able to see the rocks on the horizon before the managers are.

If management practices of the past were focused on maintaining a finely oiled machine (keeping the status quo) then management practices of the future are about constantly building and adapting the machine (challenging convention).

The emphasis on getting people to show up on time to do repetitive monotonous work day in and day out is no longer the focus of management.

The future of work sees an emphasis on constant themes such as innovation, adaptability, engagement, and creativity.

Management was designed to oversee people who only worked with their hands; today, employees work with their minds as well.

We need fewer people who exert control and manage work and more people who inspire, engage, challenge, and lead.

When it comes to the future of work, the goal of managers is to remove roadblocks from the paths of employees in order to help them succeed while empowering them to work in a way that makes them engaged and effective.

In the world of collaboration, this can be seen by managers using the same collaborative platforms that they encourage their employees to use.

Managers need to realize that their role is to serve the employees and not the other way around.

The idea of the managerless company is often associated with a style of running an organization known as holacracy whose primary focus rests on the idea of distributed decision making and self-organization.

Flattening an organization is about empowering employees to make and participate in decisions and communicate with anyone across the company.

The successful organizations change and challenge when things are going well so that they can rise above the status quo. And while others are keeping their heads above water, they are growing and innovating.

If you don’t think about and plan for the future of work, then your company has no future.
